Whether you’re 15 or 55, ballroom dancing provides many unique benefits. If even just a way to get out of the house once a week to learn something new, you don’t have to be competitive about it to reap the great perks of dancing. Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Princeton is offering these benefits to many great couples, dance enthusiasts and children.

Coordination

Dancing is a full body act. Dancing requirements movement from all areas of your body, simultaneously. Now, even if you’re not the most coordinated person to begin with, making mindful effort to improve on this in order to learn a dance will help improve your overall coordination.
Relaxation

Dancing is a great way to take a step away from the stresses and hustle and bustle of everyday life. You put yourself in a studio away from work and other stresses. The movements can be very relaxing and it’s a great way to unwind and some have fun with a loved one or some new people.

Health

As a low-impact aerobic exercise, dancing helps to improve cardio-vascular strength. Dance your way to a healthy heart with ballroom dancing lessons!

Confidence

Learning to dance can give you a fresh sense of creativity, motivation and energy. As you learn new ways to move and even begin to funnel your expression through the dance, you will find a new sense of self confidence you perhaps never had before!

Social

Dance lessons are a great way to meet new people, especially if you have never done it before. We have many first time dancers here at Fred Astaire Princeton, and we enjoy seeming them flourish not only with dance but with new friends. It is a calm and welcoming atmosphere here where you can be yourself and learn!

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather he adopted the stage name “Fox.”

When at fifteen he was left to his own resources he began participating in shows for the circus, and was hired to sing a few songs for a music publisher in San Francisco. What began was a long standing career in show business.

A few years later while performing in New York, he was selected to perform a dance act in between main attractions at the New York Theatre. The roof of the theatre was then converted into a separate stage where the Dolly Sisters performed a nightly dance revue.

Meanwhile, on the inside stage, Harry began dancing using trotting steps and it became known as “Fox’s Trot.”With it’s unusual movements capturing the attention of the elite all over the world, soon they were all trying to imitate the moves to what eventually evolved into the Fox Trot.

The Foxtrot is considered one of the most significant developments in all of ballroom dancing. With a unique combination of quick and slow steps, this permits more flexibility and gives much greater dancing pleasure for dancers and viewers than the more traditional one-step and two-step. There is more variety in the fox-trot than in any other dance, and in some ways it is the hardest dance to learn, but our instructors love teaching this dance and enjoy showing each student how to make it their own!

We offer a variety of classes including Ballroom Dancing, Wedding Dance Lessons, Salsa and Tango Lessons, and a Youth Dancing Program.

Ballroom Dancing

Our instructors will help you learn the Foxtrot, the Waltz and the Viennese Waltz. To dance the Foxtrot, dancers travel around the perimeter of the room in a counterclockwise direction in a basic rhythm of slow-slow-quick-quick. Many couples dance the Foxtrot at weddings!

The Waltz was first danced in the early 19th century and caused quite a stir as the man first had his arm around the woman’s waist! Also commonly seen at weddings, the Waltz is done with ¾ rhythms and strong accent on the first beat, was born in the suburbs of Vienna.

The Viennese Waltz began a little earlier than the Waltz in about 1880 and has a much faster tempo than the Waltz with about 180 beats a minute.

Wedding Dance Lessons

Many couples come to us for Wedding Dance Lessons in Princeton, and we enjoy helping to make their special day as perfect as it can be. Whether you come in as a couple, with your father, your mother or the whole wedding party, we can make sure your first dances are something everyone will remember after your dance lessons! We can provide instruction for everything form basic steps, to ballroom dancing to choreographed dances!

Salsa & Tango Lessons

Did you know that the Salsa combines the styles of Cuban, Puerto Rican and American to feature a complex rhythm, small steps, Cuban motion, and a close hold? As a very sexy dance, the Salsa uses patterns of 3 steps during each 4 beats.

Our instructors can you get doing the Tango in no time. The Tango is a sensual dance made famous by Rudolph Valentino, originated in Buenos Aires and was stylized by the Gauchos in Argentina before making it to the United States. The Tango was featured in “Scent Of A Woman” and “Evita.” It has also been a popular dance on the TV show “Dancing with the Stars.”

Youth Dancing Programs
